How much to charge for cupcakes

Tidy Batch Studio · Updated November 6, 2026

Short answer: work out what a dozen costs you, including frosting time and the box, then divide by (1 − payment fee % − margin %). In the fictional example below, a dozen frosted cupcakes costs 16.80 to make and needs 30.54 for a 40% margin, about 2.55 per cupcake.

Cupcakes look cheap to make until you count the frosting, the piping time and a box with inserts that keeps them standing. The same formula used for any baked good works for cupcakes, and the free pricing calculator handles both.

What goes into a cupcake price

  • Ingredients for the whole batch, including frosting, fillings and liners. The recipe cost calculator works this out from what you paid.
  • Your time: batter, filling the liners, baking, making the frosting, piping and cleaning up.
  • Packaging: a cupcake box with an insert, or a single clamshell.
  • Other costs, such as gas or electricity for the batch.
  • Payment fees, usually a percentage plus a fixed fee per order.
  • Margin: what is left for your business after everything above.

Worked example: a dozen frosted cupcakes

Fictional numbers: a recipe that makes 24 cupcakes, 12.60 of ingredients including buttercream and liners, 75 minutes of active work at 12.00 an hour, 1.20 of other costs, a dozen box with insert for 2.40 and payment fees of 4% + 0.30 per order.

Half dozens and single cupcakes

Each size has its own packaging, and the fixed payment fee is charged once per order however many cupcakes are in it. With the same recipe:

SizePackagingCostMinimum40% marginPer cupcake
Dozen, card payment2.4016.8017.8230.542.55
Half dozen, card payment1.508.709.3816.082.68
Single, card payment0.351.551.933.313.31
Single, cash0.351.551.552.592.59

The 0.30 fixed fee barely matters on a dozen but is a big part of a single cupcake paid by card. If you sell singles at a market or bake sale, check which payments you take, and round up to a price that is easy to give change for.

Frosting, toppers and special designs

  • Piped designs take longer than a simple swirl: time a few and use your real minutes.
  • Toppers you buy are ingredients; toppers you make are time. Add whichever applies.
  • Bouquets and pull-apart cupcake cakes need more arranging time and special packaging. Price them as one piece per box with their own minutes and packaging.
  • Fillings add both ingredients and time for coring and filling.

Check the price against your market

For reference: on November 6, 2026, nine small US bakeries published US$24 to US$65 for a dozen standard cupcakes, with a median of US$35 (see published bakery prices). The fictional example above, 30.54 a dozen, sits inside that range.

Compare your margin price with what bakeries and home bakers near you charge for similar cupcakes. If they charge more, you have room to raise your price. If they charge less than your minimum, change the recipe, the frosting, the size or the packaging before you sell. All prices here are before tax; check the cottage food and sales tax rules where you sell.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out the frosting when costing the recipe.
  • Forgetting the liners and the inserts that keep cupcakes in place.
  • Pricing a single cupcake as a twelfth of a dozen.
  • Not counting piping time on decorated designs.

Price your own cupcakes

The free calculator works for cupcakes: enter your batch, your time and the packaging for each size. Bakery Pricing Studio keeps every recipe in Google Sheets with its own price per box, so a dozen, a half dozen and singles are always up to date.

Questions

How much should I charge for a dozen cupcakes?

At least the cost of the dozen plus payment fees, and more for a margin. In the fictional example, a dozen needs 17.82 to cover costs and fees and 30.54 for a 40% margin.

How much should I charge for one cupcake?

Price singles with their own packaging. In the example, a single cupcake needs 3.31 for a 40% margin when paid by card and 2.59 in cash, because the fixed card fee is charged on every order.

How much should I charge for cupcakes at a bake sale?

Use your minimum as the floor and round up to an easy price. With the example costs, a cash sale covers its costs at 1.55 per cupcake; your goal for the sale decides how far above that you go.

Do cupcake liners count as packaging?

Count liners as ingredients, because they are baked with the cupcake and used for every size. Boxes, inserts and clamshells are packaging.

Does this work for cakes?

Yes: a whole cake is one piece per recipe and one per box. Count the decorating time and the cake box, and price it with the same formula.
