How much to charge for a dozen cookies

Tidy Batch Studio · Updated November 6, 2026

Short answer: work out what one dozen costs you, then divide by (1 − payment fee % − margin %). In the fictional examples below, a dozen chocolate chip cookies costs 10.90 to make and needs 20.00 for a 40% margin. A dozen decorated sugar cookies costs 33.70 and needs 60.72, because decorating takes hours.

There is no single right price for a dozen cookies: it depends on the recipe, how long the cookies take, the box they go in and what customers near you pay. What you can work out exactly is the price that pays for all of it. The examples use the same math as the free cookie pricing calculator, so you can check every number with your own. What goes into the price of a dozen

  • Ingredients for 12 cookies, worked out from the whole recipe.
  • Your time: mixing, shaping, baking, decorating and cleaning up, at the hourly rate you want to earn.
  • Packaging for a dozen: the box, liner, bags, label and ribbon.
  • Other costs, such as gas or electricity for the batch.
  • Payment fees from your card reader or online checkout, usually a percentage plus a fixed fee per order.
  • Margin: what is left for your business after everything above.

The full method, step by step, is in how to price cookies for a home bakery.

Example 1: a dozen chocolate chip cookies

Fictional numbers: a recipe that makes 24 cookies (2 dozen), 45 minutes of active work at 12.00 an hour, a dozen box that costs 1.60, and payment fees of 4% + 0.30 per order.

ItemFor the recipe (24 cookies)Per dozen
Ingredients8.404.20
Your time45 minutes at 12.00 an hour = 9.004.50
Other costs1.200.60
Packaging1.60 per dozen box1.60
Cost of the dozen10.90
Minimum price(10.90 + 0.30) ÷ 0.9611.67
Price for a 40% margin(10.90 + 0.30) ÷ 0.5620.00

20.00 a dozen is about 1.67 per cookie. Below 11.67 the dozen loses money once the payment fee is taken.

Example 2: a dozen decorated sugar cookies

Fictional numbers: the same 24-cookie batch size, with royal icing in the ingredients, 4 hours of active work for the batch (dough, cutting, baking, icing and decorating), individual heat-sealed bags plus a box for 3.50 a dozen, and the same fees.

ItemFor the recipe (24 cookies)Per dozen
Ingredients, with icing11.205.60
Your time4 hours at 12.00 an hour = 48.0024.00
Other costs1.200.60
Packagingbags, box and label, 3.50 per dozen3.50
Cost of the dozen33.70
Minimum price(33.70 + 0.30) ÷ 0.9635.42
Price for a 40% margin(33.70 + 0.30) ÷ 0.5660.72

That is about 5.06 per cookie. Time is 24.00 of the 33.70, or 71% of the cost of the dozen. This is why decorated cookies cost several times more than drop cookies: the ingredients barely change, the hours do. Time your next batch and use your real minutes; more detailed designs take longer.

Why a dozen is not twice a half dozen

With the chocolate chip recipe, a box of 6 needs 10.81 for a 40% margin, so two boxes of 6 come to 21.62. One dozen box needs 20.00. The difference is packaging and payment fees: one dozen box costs less than two small boxes, and the fixed fee is paid once per order instead of twice. Price each size you sell with its own packaging instead of doubling the smaller one.

Half dozens, two dozens and mixed dozens

  • Half a dozen: set 6 pieces per box and use the packaging for a half-dozen box.
  • Two dozen or more: price it as one box of 24, or quote two dozens with one fixed fee if it is a single order.
  • Mixed dozens: cost each kind from its own recipe and add them up. The guide on holiday cookie box pricing shows how, with assembly time.

Check the price against what people pay near you

For reference: on November 6, 2026, nine small US bakeries published US$14 to US$40 for a dozen chocolate chip or drop cookies (median US$25), and nine published US$36 to US$96 for a dozen custom decorated sugar cookies (median US$51). See published bakery prices.

  • Look at what bakeries, markets and other home bakers near you charge for a similar dozen.
  • If they charge more than your margin price, you have room to raise yours.
  • If they charge less than your minimum, change something before you sell: the recipe, the size, the packaging or the design time.
  • Check the rules where you sell, such as cottage food and sales tax rules. All prices here are before tax.

Common mistakes

  • Guessing a price per cookie and multiplying by 12 without counting packaging and fees.
  • Leaving out decorating time, the biggest cost in a decorated dozen.
  • Giving a discount on a dozen that drops the price below the minimum.
  • Never updating prices after butter, sugar or boxes go up.

Price your own dozen

Set "Pieces per box" to 12 in the free calculator and enter your own costs. Bakery Pricing Studio keeps every recipe in Google Sheets with a price per box, so you can compare a half dozen, a dozen and your own box sizes side by side.

Questions

How much should I charge for a dozen homemade cookies?

At least the cost of the dozen plus payment fees, and more if you want a margin. With the fictional numbers above, a dozen chocolate chip cookies needs 11.67 to cover costs and fees and 20.00 for a 40% margin. For reference, nine small US bakeries published a median of US$25 for a dozen drop cookies in November 2026. Your own costs and your local market decide the final number.

Why do decorated sugar cookies cost so much more per dozen?

Because of time. In the example, decorating brings the batch to 4 hours of work, and time becomes 71% of the cost of the dozen. The ingredients cost about the same as plain cookies.

Should a dozen cost less per cookie than a half dozen?

Usually a little, because the box and the payment fee are shared by more cookies. In the example, 20.00 a dozen is 1.67 per cookie, while 10.81 for 6 is 1.80 per cookie.

Should I charge more for Christmas cookies?

Charge for what changes: gift packaging, extra decorating time and assembly. The holiday cookie box guide walks through a mixed holiday box.

Do these prices include sales tax?

No. Everything here is before tax. Tax rules depend on where you sell.
